Spice Up Your Party

Spice Up Your Party

New Years is now a distant memory, and the January blues are over, so as we inch towards warmer weather, why not spice things up in the kitchen! When it comes to spicy food some people think the hotter the better, whatever your spice preference is, try adding some to your usual home favorites. It can be for a family meal or catering for a party, but adding spice can really add depth of flavor, without making you sweat.

Cayenne Pepper

Paul Evans Catering

This is a red-hot fiery pepper which is ground. Unlike chili powder, cayenne pepper is not mixed with other spices and has a distinctive taste. While this spice is made from one of the hottest chilies don’t let it scare you off. Cayenne gives off heat without changing detracting from the flavor of your dish.

Try this Vegetable chili,  great for the family-style catering.

Saffron

Due to the number of hands needed on the labor of growing and picking saffron, it is considered one of the most expensive spices in the world. However, don’t let the price tag stop you giving it a go. This delicate spice with a slightly bittersweet taste is great, not just in Indian dishes but also in rice’s dishes like risotto.

Try this warming saffron risotto.

Nutmeg

This warming spice has its own distinct taste while being able to bring out other flavors in a dish without overpowering. Nutmeg is commonly used in desserts and goes well with fruit dishes; however, it can add a nice depth to mash potatoes and side dishes.

Try this nutmeg snack – great for after dinner treats for your guests.
