Yom Kippur – Food planning for the Fast

Yom Kippur – Food planning for the Fast

Yom Kippur is the highest holy day on the Jewish calendar, and while food may not be what first comes to mind for Yom Kippur, the day of atonement, planning out the break fast is still an important task.

Here at Paul Evans Catering, we understand that during this religious holiday planning can be a lot of work. Here are some out of the ordinary dishes we think are great to prepare for breaking the fast.

As the fast begins at sundown after the Seudah Hamafseket, the day before often involves preparing a feast where fish is traditionally included. When it comes to fish dishes, there are lots of beautiful options. Seabass in a tomato, onion and garlic broth is an aromatic and great option as a pre-fast meal.

Another fish dish we love is Salmon and leek remoulade with Gazpacho sauce which is a wonderfully filling meal ahead of Yom Kippur.

Breaking the fast

After coming home from synagogue, friends and family gather together to enjoy a light meal for Yom Kippur. These meals traditionally use more dairy-based meals. At Paul Evans Catering, we have a variety of light meal options to help break the fast.

A variety of frittatas is a twist on the traditional breaking of the fast meals. Frittatas are a great base for different ingredients. Why not try tomato and leek for a classic taste, or spinach and roasted peppers if you like something a bit sweeter.

If you prefer finger food for break fast, we love miniature potato pancakes with applesauce for a savory finger food option. How about miniature brioches with turkey brie and honey mustard. These small delights are ideal when planning to break the fast with friends and family. And of course, you can always go with a platter of bagels, lox and cream cheese, always an old crowd pleaser.
